The Isles of Scilly are a distinctive archipelago off the south west tip of Cornwall. Made up of dozens of islands, rocks, and skerries, they offer clear water, sheltered anchorages, white sand beaches, wildlife, and an atmosphere that feels a world away from the mainland.

For cruising sailors, the Isles of Scilly are a firm favourite. They offer a wonderfully varied experience, where one day might be spent swimming off the boat in clear water or watching seals from the cockpit, and the next exploring quiet beaches, wandering the islands footpaths, or enjoying a relaxed meal ashore. With the main islands close together, passage times are short, leaving plenty of time to explore and fully enjoy what each island has to offer.

Meet the expert

Robin Baron serves as President of the Cruising Association and also contributes his regional expertise as South West England Editor for The Cruising Almanac. A highly experienced cruising sailor, he has built deep knowledge of both UK and European waters through years of passage making.

Robin has cruised the South West coast extensively, alongside sailing further afield to the Baltic, the North Sea, the English Channel, Biscay, the Irish Sea, and the Scottish West Coast. This breadth of experience gives him a practical, well rounded perspective on different cruising grounds, conditions, and passage planning challenges.

In a recent interview, when asked to name his favourite cruising destination, Robin chose the Isles of Scilly. With his depth of local knowledge and long standing affection for the islands, we can’t think of anyone better to share their experience of cruising the Isles of Scilly.
