Base Layer boat insurance
Third party only policy

This is basically head-to-toe stuff. Covers your boat, you and others for all sorts of things including:

  • Legal liability for damage/injury to others
  • Pollution
  • Accidental damage
  • Theft & vandalism
  • Fire, sinking & storm damage
  • Belongings & salvage

Please check your policy for exclusions such as gradual deterioration.

This is third party cover – it protects others if they’re injured or their property is damaged on your watch, but it does not cover your own boat for theft, fire, or accidental damage.

For inland waterways, a minimum of £1 million Third Party Liability is a legal requirement, and most marinas also require at least Third Party Liability as a minimum to moor your boat. This protects you if you have an accident on the water and cause damage to another boat, someone else’s property, or injure another person.

Is boat insurance a legal requirement as a boat owner?

In the UK, while not legally mandatory, many harbours, marinas, and inland waterways require comprehensive coverage before allowing boats to use their facilities.

For inland waterways, a minimum of £1 million Third Party Liability is a legal requirement. This protects you if you have an accident on the water and cause damage to another boat, someone else’s property, or injure another person.

And if you’re planning to sail in international waters — especially in countries like Spain, Italy, or Greece — you’ll need proof of insurance to comply with local regulations.

Luckily, you’re in the right place to get boat insurance – click here for a quote or view our boat insurance documents to see what is covered.

Do you offer multi-boat insurance?

We can certainly arrange cover for individuals with multiple boats however we cannot provide them under a single policy. While each policy is distinct, your policies is managed under one easy-to-access account through our quote and buy portal. That means you’ll enjoy a streamlined experience with all your policies in one place—simple, organised, and hassle-free.

Is my personal equipment covered?

Yes, cover can include personal effects and equipment such as clothing, navigation equipment, and safety gear. Limits apply and you can view this here under Section C – Personal Belongings.

Where can I find a marina?

Buddy has scoured every nook and cranny of UK marinas and created Buddy’s Marina Guide. Whether you’re gearing up for a seaside escapade or navigating the charming inland waterways, Buddy’s interactive marina map will help you discover the perfect mooring spot just for you.
