Learn the skills you need for safe, confident cruising

If you’re new to narrowboating, or want to build your skills and confidence, there are several courses available across the UK that teach everything from boat handling to safety and maintenance. Whether you’re preparing to liveaboard, planning to cruise solo, or just want to brush up on your skills, here’s a guide to some of the most useful narrowboat training courses out there.

RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate (most popular)

Offered by: RYA-accredited training centres across the UK. Duration: 1 or 2 days.

Ideal for: Complete beginners, liveaboards, couples, families.

Cost: £180 – £300 (per person).

The most popular beginner course, ideal for anyone planning to steer their own boat.

Covers: Boat handling, mooring, locks, navigation rules, ropework, safety procedures, and basic engine checks.

RYA Inland Waterways Crew Course

Duration: 1 day | Cost: ~£150.

Perfect for partners or crew members.

Covers: Lock operation, rope handling, safety awareness, and teamwork between helm and crew.

 

Boat safety and maintenance courses

Learn how to maintain your engine, heating, batteries, and plumbing – ideal for liveaboards.

Available at various locations including: Braunston Marina, CanalAbility, Whilton Marina.

Also try – free online webinars and YouTube tutorials such as those offered by canal charities, marinas, and the Haven KJ YouTube channel!

Commercial use training

Planning to run a floating business or hire boat? You may need the RYA Inland Waterways Commercial Endorsement, which requires the Helmsman Certificate, First Aid, and additional safety training.

 

Taster days or tuition cruises

One-to-one training on your own or a hire boat is ideal for solo boaters or couples, and will cover boat handling, mooring, navigating locks and general tips. Providers include:

  • Kate Boats (Warwickshire).
  • Willow Wren (Rugby).
  • R. Boat Handling (Shropshire Union).

 

Online resources & self- study

For informal learning, try:

  • Canal & River Trust’s Boater’s Handbook (free download or DVD).
  • YouTube channels like Floating Our Boat and Cruising The Cut.
  • Online forums like net or Facebook groups.
