What is boat insurance?

Boat insurance is there to help protect you financially if something goes wrong while owning, using or storing your boat. Depending on the level of cover you choose, it can help with costs linked to damage, theft, accidents, third-party claims and other risks that can come with spending time on the water.

While boat insurance isn’t a legal requirement in the UK, you’ll usually need at least third-party insurance to use many public waterways, marinas, harbours and some overseas cruising areas.

Whether you own a narrowboat, yacht, motorboat, dinghy, RIB, inland cruiser or another type of boat, the right boat insurance gives you the confidence to get out on the water and enjoy your time afloat. With cover in place, you know there’s support available if the unexpected happens.

Do you need boat insurance?

Even when you’re simply getting from A to B, things don’t always go to plan. Boat insurance provides a safety net when things aren’t plain sailing. And if you don’t have the right policy to hand whilst out on the waters, you risk facing fines, or worse.

Ultimately, as one of your most prized possessions, boat insurance can provide financial security and peace of mind against third party claims, loss or damage to your pride and joy.

Base Layer boat insurance

Our Base Layer policy provides essential third-party insurance. This includes cover for damage to other vessels or property, injury to other people and pollution liabilities where you are legally responsible. The policy also includes emergency medical expenses for you, your family and guests, together with personal accident cover for serious injuries sustained while using your boat.

This can be a suitable option for boat owners who are primarily looking to meet marina or navigation authority requirements while ensuring they have protection against third-party claims.

All Weather boat insurance

For broader protection, our All Weather policy provides cover for your vessel itself, alongside third-party liabilities. Cover includes accidental damage, theft, fire, explosion, vandalism, acts of piracy, salvage charges and certain machinery-related losses. Protection applies whether your boat is afloat, ashore, being launched, lifted or transported by road, rail, air or ferry.

The policy also includes personal belongings cover, emergency medical expenses and personal accident benefits. Additional features can include marina benefits, optional racing cover and small craft hire benefits depending on your vessel and policy arrangements.

What does boat insurance not cover?

Like all the best relationships, you have to give your boat some regular care and attention; lack of upkeep, general wear and tear and improper storage of your boat could all affect your cover. Your insurance policy is not a maintenance contract. Check out Haven’s Helpful Hints for tips on how to remedy some of these!

If racing, offshore sailing or longer trips are part of your boating plans, it’s important to make sure your insurance cover reflects how you use your boat.

How much is boat insurance?

Boats are often seen as a luxury, but for many owners they’re an important part of life on the water. The good news is that boat insurance is often far more affordable than people expect.

Factors such as engine size, age, maintenance, value, location, storage and use all play a part in the cost of cover. However, insuring a £100,000 yacht for normal leisure use is often considerably cheaper than insuring a supercar worth the same amount.

Boat insurance FAQs

Do you need a recent survey to get boat insurance?

You may need a recent survey to get boat insurance, depending on your boat, its age, condition, value and the type of cover you’re looking for. Surveys help insurers understand the condition of the vessel and whether there are any issues that could affect the level of risk.

If you’re buying a second-hand boat, renewing a policy for an older boat, or insuring a boat that has not been surveyed for some time, it’s worth checking what information you’ll needed before applying. A recent survey can also be useful for your own peace of mind, as it may highlight maintenance work or safety considerations before they become bigger problems.

Who should I get to carry out a survey on my boat?

  • Find a surveyor who is knowledgeable about the type of boat you have.
  • The surveyor must be independent of the seller and any intermediary involved in the sale.
  • The surveyor should have professional indemnity insurance.
  • Many surveyors carry qualifications and/or are members of professional bodies, such as the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) and the International Institute of Marine Surveyors (IIMS).
  • To find a surveyor, get in touch with a professional body, check their websites, or ask your local marina or a yacht broker for their recommended list.

What type of insurance do I need?

The first question to ask yourself is what is on your boating wishlist this year? Which direction will the wind or currents take you, and are you planning any races to get there?

Our Base Layer (third party) cover offers security for pleasure sailing, covering third party claims against you and worst-case scenarios of injury and more. Or for the full bells, whistles and foghorns, our All Weather (all risks) policy covers fire, theft, vandalism, accidental damage, emergency medical expenses, personal accidents and a whole ship-load more.

Do I need insurance to rent a boat?

If you’re renting a boat, the insurance arrangements will usually depend on the rental provider and the terms of the hire agreement. Some rental companies may include insurance as part of the booking, while others may require you to meet certain conditions before you’re covered.

Before renting, check exactly what is and isn’t included. You should understand whether the cover applies to accidental damage, third party liability, personal belongings, excess payments and any restrictions on where or how the boat can be used.

Does boat insurance cover other drivers?

Boat insurance may cover other people to use your boat, but this will depend on the terms of your policy. Some policies may include named users or allow other experienced boaters to operate the vessel, while others may place limits on who is covered.

If someone else is likely to use your boat, it’s important to check this before they take the helm. You may need to add them to the policy, confirm their experience, or make sure they meet any conditions set out in your documents.

Does boat insurance cover engine damage?

Boat insurance may cover engine damage if it’s caused by an insured event, such as accidental damage, fire, theft or another covered incident. However, cover for mechanical failure, wear and tear, poor maintenance or gradual deterioration may be limited or excluded.

Because engines are one of the most important and expensive parts of many boats, it’s worth checking the policy wording carefully. Regular servicing, proper storage and routine maintenance can all help reduce the chance of engine problems and support your position if you ever need to make a claim.
