Managing Claims as we emerge from Lockdown

You would think that, at a time when we have very limited access to our boats, the claims teams around our industry would be relaxing at home, feet on their desks, chilling out waiting for the phone to ring.

But we know life isn’t quite that simple. The majority of our day to day claims actually occur when the vessel isn’t being used. The number of claims we are seeing is consistent with any other year but we’re ready to help when you are all allowed back down to the marina. Our hugely experienced Claims team have been busy ensuring that our customers continue to experience the great service we have always provided.

There are many marina owners who have done a great job keeping regular checks on boats and their moorings and alerting owners of anything that looked out of place.

Not all boatowners have their boat stored away in a marina with someone from the yard able to keep an eye on it. Some are still out on swinging moorings, on banksides or in places where owners can’t easily get to them or are legally not able to.

At Haven Knox-Johnston we’re committed to supporting our customers and crewmates in the event of a claim, especially during this difficult time, when boat access is limited. We will try to be as flexible as we can within our policy wordings, so that our customers are not penalised for issues beyond their control.

We’ve noticed that when a claim has been approved, the repair work is often taking longer than usual. This can be because of COVID restrictions in boatyards too, as many staff may have been furloughed or even spares may be harder to source as a result of Brexit.

But it’s at times like these, it is important that your boat insurer is one you can trust and rely on. We, at Haven Knox-Johnston are making it our priority to ensure our customers and crewmates have access to our experienced boat claims crew in West Malling to help you when you need us most.
