The Taittenger Regatta at Yarmouth, IOW, is one of the team’s favourite events, combining great racing with excellent social activities ashore.

Haven K-J Enigma was competing in Classes 3, which was the largest of the IRC fleets, with 24 yachts entered. These included some very competitive boats such as Whooper, Swuzzlebubble, Quokka and Jaywalker.

Crews were welcomed on Saturday morning to near calm conditions in the Western Solent and the race committee decided to keep in the harbour to wait for the breeze to arrive. A reasonable NE established itself and yachts made their way out to Berthon buoy SE of Lymington. After a further delay, racing got underway at about 12:30, in a light NE breeze. Haven K-J Enigma decided the committee boat end of the line was favoured, but unfortunately, so did most of the fleet. Having wiggled through the pack to find a good position on the line, Enigma tacked soon after the gun into clear air.

The top mark was rounded in 4th place and a further place was gained by on the second run but staying further to the mainland side out of the tide.  At the finish, the team were 3rd on the water and second place on corrected time behind Catch 22.

The SW sea breeze then established itself and second race was run in a steady 10 knot south-westerly. Again, the committee boat end of the start line was favoured and was very crowded.

Haven K-J Enigma opted for a start about a quarter of the way down the line and looked for an early tack to port to head towards the mainland shore and out of the tide.

Having rounded the top mark in second place, a gybe set was executed. As the leg progressed, it become apparent that those on the right of the run were gaining and by the bottom mark, Haven K-J Enigma were down to 5th. After a short fetch and then a short beat to the finish, the positions remained unchanged and so results for the day were 2nd and 5th, putting Haven K-J Enigma in 2nd overall, from the Sigma 38, With Alacrity.

Sunday dawned even calmer than Saturday, but the fleet was sent out to make sure they were in position should the breeze arrive. After enjoying the sunshine for a couple of hours, the Race Officer decided it was unlikely breeze would arrive in time and so racing was abandoned for the day.
